Mastering Police Role Plays with the CUDSAR Model: Your Ultimate Guide

The Secret Weapon for Police Recruitment Success

If you're facing role plays as part of your police recruitment journey, you're likely feeling a mix of anticipation and anxiety. Whether applying to the Police Service of Northern Ireland or any other force across the UK, one thing remains constant: the competition is fierce, and you need every advantage possible.

Enter the CUDSAR model—a powerful framework that has helped hundreds of candidates ace their role-play scenarios confidently and precisely.

What is CUDSAR and Why Does It Work?

CUDSAR is a comprehensive approach to handling conflict situations effectively. It stands for:

âś… C - Confront the situation professionally

âś… U - Understand through strategic questioning

âś… D - Define and summarize to demonstrate active listening

âś… S - Seek solutions with our powerful "top 3" approach

âś… A - Assess options effectively

âś… R - Result in positive outcomes

This model originated from police non-conflict management training in the 1990s and has proven more effective for role-play scenarios than the newer National Decision Model (NDM). Why? Because it provides a clear, step-by-step structure that assessors can easily follow and score.

Breaking Down the CUDSAR Model

Confront: Making a Powerful First Impression

The 'Confront' stage isn't about confrontation—it's about establishing control from the outset with a confident, professional introduction. This crucial opening sets the tone for the entire interaction.

A strong opening might sound like:

"Good morning, my name is [Your Name]. I'm a [role] with [force]. I understand there's a situation regarding [brief mention of the scenario]. I'd like to listen to everything you have to say, and then we can explore some solutions together. I may take some notes and ask some clarifying questions as we go. How does that sound?"

This approach immediately:

  • Establishes your authority

  • Creates a roadmap for the conversation

  • Demonstrates professionalism

  • Builds rapport

Understand: Asking the Right Questions

During this phase, you'll need to gather all relevant information using skilled questioning techniques. The key is to:

  • Start with open questions (using the 5W's: Who, What, When, Where, Why)

  • Use "softeners" to make questions less confrontational ("I'm just wondering if you could...")

  • Listen actively and make mental notes of points to probe further

  • Identify vague statements and explore them in more detail

Remember, the assessors are looking for your ability to extract information efficiently and compassionately.

To Define and Summarise: Proving You've Listened

This critical stage demonstrates your active listening skills and ability to organise information logically. You'll need to:

  • Reflect back the key points of what you've heard

  • Prioritise the most important elements

  • Acknowledge emotions and concerns

  • Confirm you've understood correctly

A strong summary might begin: "So from what you've told me, there are three main concerns here. Firstly... Secondly... And finally..."

This approach shows empathy, intelligence, and an ability to process complex information quickly.

Seek Solutions: Demonstrating Problem-Solving Skills

When the role player inevitably pushes back with "That's your job" or "You tell me," you'll need to be ready with well-structured solutions. We recommend the "power of three" approach:

  1. Enforcement: What immediate action can be taken to address the situation?

  2. Prevention: What can be done to stop this happening again?

  3. Advocacy: How can you advocate for everyone involved, including the community?

By presenting multiple options, you demonstrate flexibility and comprehensive thinking—qualities every police force values.

Evaluate and Result: Closing with Confidence

The final stage requires you to:

  • Clearly state what actions you'll take

  • Explain how you'll keep them informed

  • Check their understanding and satisfaction

  • Leave them with a positive impression

If they express dissatisfaction (which is common in role plays), respond with a question: "What specifically are you not satisfied with?" This allows you to address concerns directly while maintaining control of the conversation.
